Guide to Window Installation Methods

All window installations are comprised of:
l Window frame (the portion of the window that holds the sash and is fastened to the framing of the building)
l Window sash (the part that holds the glass and is the movable portion of all operable windows)
l Window glass
l Window trim (interior and exterior )

Window replacements can be done in one of the following two main methods:

1. The sash replacement or "pocket" installation method and
2. The complete tear-out or "full frame" installation method

The Pocket (sash) replacement method:

l Only involves removal of the existing sash and glass
l All existing interior and exterior trim remains
l Usually less expensive than full frame tear-outs
l Doesn't improve the performance of the home as well as a full frame replacement
l Will reduce glass size in existing windows
l Is most often an advantage when there are plaster walls or elaborate trim that would be hard to replace and almost impossible to remove without damaging

The Full Frame tear-out method:

l The entire existing window and all the existing trim, inside and out, are removed
l The new windows are made to fit the rough openings just as they were when the home was built
l Will almost always require new interior and exterior trim
l Is more time and labor intensive
l Is usually more expensive than sash only replacements
l Does a better job of increasing the thermal performance of the home
l Usually looks better than the pocket installs

Choosing which method should be used depends on the goals are for the project.

If the homeowner is looking to enhance the look as well as the performance of the windows he/she will usually be more satisfied with the results if they choose to go with total frame tear-outs rather than pocket installs

If the homeowner has old plaster walls that may be fragile, and/or, exotic or multi piece ornamental trim on the interior or the exterior, and/or, stucco or other material on the exterior that would be extremely difficult to replace or repair, the pocket method or sash only replacement is probably the way to go.

There are valid reasons for performing either type of replacement installation and homeowners should consult their replacement specialist for the conditions in their home that will point to which method fits the needs best. Please contact J&J Windows and Doors for more information.
