BEAUTIFUL BATHROOM IN BERWYN

It’s not often that we have the opportunity to work on a home built 100 years ago!  Yes, this month we spotlight some wonderful J&J clients that live in a 100-year-old bungalow in Berwyn.  Both are in the medical field, live very busy lives, and managed to raise all their children in the home.  Now that they’ve become empty nesters, it was time to makeover the home the way they wanted.  After an extensive kitchen remodel, they turned their attention to the very outdated bathrooms.  Working on a home this old requires special skills.  They chose J&J because they wanted a one-stop type company that could bring their dreams to life.

The project was rough-going in the beginning, especially the master bathroom. Many unsafe, dangerous conditions were found hidden beneath walls and ceilings during demolition (not uncommon in a very old home). We corrected all the problems to ensure the home was safe for our new clients. We found existing floor framing to be so far out-of-level that we had to rebuild the floors. Four inches of concrete underlayment needed to be removed. And, the electric hadn’t been up to code in over 30 years. To make sure the bathrooms would stand the test of time, we restructured the building schedule and corrected the defects. This was time very well spent; the finished result is amazing! This 100-year old home now has new modern, high-end bathrooms.

Our clients spared no expense on the selections. The master bath was adorned with: Kohler Stance faucets in brushed nickel; Bertch cabinetry in a brindle stain; an Osage door; HanStone quartz countertops in Tiffany Grey were used on top of the vanity and also as a ledge for the glass block window. A very special Kohler Seaforth 54” cast iron tub was specified. Special in that it is one of only two models available in cast iron at this non-standard length of 54 inches. (At J&J, we keep looking for just the right product for your project.) Covering the walls and floor, in our most popular 12 x 24 sizing, is Florim Ethos Beige tile with TEC Antique White grout. Bliss Spa Glass tile is used as accents throughout. Benjamin Moore Piedmont Gray paint finishes off this exquisite bathroom remodel.

The basement bath was outfitted just as nicely as the upstairs master.  Again, Kohler Stance faucets in brushed nickel were chosen along with cabinetry in a Graphite semi-gloss paint and Osage door.  HanStone quartz in a new color called, Chia, sits atop the vanity and holds an undermount Kohler porcelain sink.  The clients choose a “hardwood floor” look tile for the floor from CTI.  The tile is 6”x36” and the color is Tabula (extremely popular with our clients).  Florim Stratos Avorio tile (with TEC Pearl grout) was used on the shower walls and we added a glass tile border using Bliss Iceland tile.  The room was then painted in Boothbay Gray.

As you can see from the photos, the transformation on this home was dramatic.  Working with an old home requires patience and very understanding clients.  Surprises are the norm, not the exception.  This project did not disappoint.  We thoroughly enjoyed working on and transforming this home.  J&J feels honored, actually blessed, when people put the trust of their home in our hands.  We take the responsibility seriously and try to live up to our promises.  If you are considering a remodeling project, we would love the opportunity to work with you and your family to renovate your home.
