Historic Aurora Bathroom

Not all of our projects have the history of this 150-year-old Aurora bathroom renovation! It was time to bring this hallway bath into the 21st Century with some bright new updates, period-appropriate wainscoting, and tile touches. This project is a great example of combining old and new, with respect for the period architecture meshing perfectly with modern touches.

Goals: The old colors in this room were making it seem much smaller than it actually was. A full bath with a large window, it had the potential to squeeze in a lot more luxury – and feel larger in the process!

Starting with the choice of wall paint, our team worked to completely revitalize the space, while respecting its historic roots. The owners chose two complementary Benjamin Moore paint colors for the walls and wainscoting: Quiet Moments and Oxford White. These provided a soft wash of color to contrast gently with the new tile choices and white fixtures.

The old bathtub arrangement was plain, with a showerhead workaround and few accommodations for a really good soak. After pulling out the old tub, J&J replaced it with a new Kohler Hourglass unit. This was finished out with a big change. Now, an enclosure matches the new wainscoting that we installed. The replacement of so much green tile was an amazing difference in the overall appearance of this bathroom.

The transformation continued with a new tub and shower walls in tile. The homeowners selected a bright white tile: Delray 2” x 8” White Caps in a beveled glossy style. The horizontal installation has the benefit of making this space seem wider and more spacious. The use of a clean, simple white opens it up even further.

A recessed wall niche frees up space in the shower, while an elegant new tub rail in Hanstone Quartz color Silhouette MV628 offsets the flooring choice perfectly. The same deep sable Silhouette shade also shows up on the niche shelves. This 12” x 20” insert provides plenty of room for shampoo bottles and more, while the Hanstone finish is durable and easy to clean.

The interesting black and white floor tile choice pulls the new look together. The basketweave pattern of the Expression Daylight style is also perfect for this historical downtown area home. The border uses Expression 2” x 2” Mosaic tiles in Midnight.

After converting the old tub and shower combo into an inviting new spot, our team was ready to tackle the rest of this interesting remodeling project.

Kohler fixtures added a shining newness to the sink, and the old wall tile was replaced with a crisp new wainscot accent finished out in Oxford White. Finishing out all the new white additions to the bathroom was a Kohler Memoirs Classic toilet.

Each carefully chosen element came together perfectly in the all-new space, blending with the period touches elsewhere in the home – like original door knobs and woodwork. The owners added their own decorative accents in navy blue – a classic combination with the black and white tiles. The end result is a welcoming and functional hall bath that seems perfectly at home in its historical surroundings.
