Living in the Lap of Luxury

Families are constantly looking for ways to improve their quality of life at home. Homeowners renovate kitchens to fit their lifestyle, add accessible bathrooms for aging family members, or renovate outdoor spaces so that more time can be spent enjoying nature. We recently had the neat opportunity to work with a family who wanted to build a custom room addition specifically for a swim spa. Now that is a project we were excited to dive into!

If you’re unfamiliar with them, swim spas offer a low maintenance alternative to swimming pools. They offer adjustable water currents for exercise, are economical and relatively easy to install either indoors or outdoors. There are a variety of designs to meet various needs, and they are great for fitness, relaxing, hydrotherapy, and fun for family members of every age.

These Plainfield homeowners had a weathered wooden deck that we removed in order to build a seamless custom room addition to house their new swim spa. In order to place the swim spa onto the new concrete pad, we used a crane to lift it up and over the house. We’re thankful we work with such skilled professionals! The exterior of the addition blends in beautifully with the existing home exterior, so it looks completely cohesive.

While swimming, homeowners wanted to let in natural light, so we suggested skylights, truly bringing the outdoors in. Here they can swim even during the coldest winter weather and relax in the warm spa while watching snow fall outside. An oversized ceiling fan will keep this space cool during warmer weather months, and motorized blinds on the windows are convenient and offer plenty of privacy. One of our favorite features is this gorgeous vaulted ceiling with beams. It adds architectural detail to the space and makes it appear more grand.

Luxury vinyl flooring in a white-washed light color was selected for its obvious durability. This will be a high-moisture and high-traffic area, and flooring needs to be able to withstand that usage. Additionally, we’ve painted the walls with Benjamin Moore Aura bath and spa paint, which protects against humidity. These seemingly minor choices are significant because they ensure a safe, durable, clean space that will serve this family well for years to come.

The homeowners did lose a deck in order to make room for this addition, but they gained a beautiful new patio perfect for entertaining. Guests can take a dip in the water, come out to dry off and spend time visiting on the stylish and modern patio. Not only is the patio clean and inviting, but it comes with an outdoor kitchen space, firepit with ample seating, and a half wall for additional seating and privacy. The staircase coming down is crisp and elevates the outdoor living space. All that’s left to do is grab a drink and head to the shaded area to catch the Sunday game on the large-screen television while listening to the custom water feature hidden within a nook in the bricked enclosure. Now homeowners have luxury indoors and out!
